Honduras Medical Mission 2020

Catholic Christian Outreach (CCO) is gearing up for its first evangelical medical mission! This summer, they will be joining the Community of Franciscan Friars of the Renewal in Comayagua, Honduras, from July 17 to 26th, 2020 at their St. Benedict Joseph Medical Clinic.

This mission is geared towards medical professionals, nurses, as well as students who are studying in a variety of medical fields. However, it is possible that students or alumni without a medical background may be considered.

The Community of Franciscan Friars of Renewal has many tenets, one of which is the dedication to serving the poor. They provide free medical care to the less fortunate brothers and sisters in the second poorest country in the Western Hemisphere. The medical centre has been established for 15 years, and American surgical teams go 6-7 times per year to perform surgeries. Often times, they can perform up to 100 surgeries in a week’s time.

This will be CCO’s first evangelical medical mission for medical professionals and alumni.  The goal will be to perform essential surgeries free of charge for the less fortunate who live in Comayagua, while also incorporating the Catholic faith into the medical care for these patients (Body & Soul medicine).

There is a great need for general surgeons (hernia repairs, gallbladder removals), urologists (TURP procedures), ophthalmologists (cataract surgeries) and of course, anesthesiologists. There are 3 available fully equipped operating rooms. The plan is to have 2 of the ORs open and to perform up to 50 surgeries in that week. All patients will have been worked up in previous weeks leading up to the mission by the family physicians and doctors in Comayagua. In terms of the evangelical portion, the majority of the evangelization work will be done by the other participants on the trip (ie. lay members, medical nursing staff etc.) unless the physician is also comfortable with sharing their Catholic faith. The hope is to have a short prayer gathering with patients, families and medical staff in the evening prior to the scheduled surgeries.
